I AM LOVE: A MEDITATION FOR SPIRITUAL HEALING

by: Carolyn Berghuis, MS, ND, CTN

Like every journey, you need a good road map. The journey toward happiness and peace is no different. This journey requires the healing balm of love, yet sometimes we are hurt and we find ourselves estranged from love, the one and only thing that can heal us. Excerpt from Chapter 14 of Understanding The Jesus Code

One thing is for certain – human suffering exists in this world. Mankind has experienced suffering since the Fall. However, freedom is available. Freedom from suffering, oddly enough, can be discovered as we walk through our pain and heartache instead of trying to avoid it. This is done when we invite love into the struggle and allow love to be our support. Carolyn’s I AM Love meditation is quickly becoming a safe haven for those who desire to grow through their pain and experience the bliss that awaits.

For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God. – Hebrews 12:2.

You can practice this meditation anytime as it helps bring immediate peace by inviting love in. It can be particularly helpful when practiced during intense emotional pain, trauma and anxiety. This meditation helps re-orientate one towards God – the healer of all our ills.

Let’s Begin

Say three simple words repetitively, until you experience peace in your heart. There is no need to focus on your breath to receive respite from this prayer; however, you may want to practice deep breathing with this meditation.

There are three phrases to choose from for this meditation. You can use the word love, peace, or good in the mantra to bring you to the space of truth – the truth that you are created in the image of the Holy Trinity. While all three words are great for everyone to use from time to time, I have found the triads of the Enneagram helpful here. If you do not know your Enneagram number, or you are not familiar with the Enneagram, I invite you to visit The Enneagram Institute’s website. Here is the link: Enneagram Institute.

I – Am – Love

I – Am – Peace

I – Am – Good

Enneagram Triads

  • Body Triad (8, 9, 1): Individuals in the body triad benefit from using the word “love” when they are transforming through and beyond anger.
  • Head Triad (5, 6, 7): Individuals in the head triad benefit from using the word “peace” when they are transforming through and beyond anxiety.
  • Heart Triad (1, 2, 3): Individuals in the heart triad benefit from the word “good” when they are transforming through and beyond shame.

Let’s Break This Prayer Down

I Am

  1. Whatever you say after these two words is vitally important for your well-being! How many times have we said “I am fat”, “I am ugly”, “I am so stupid”, “I am not good enough”.. and so the long list goes. And it doesn’t feel good when we say it! Why? Because these statements are not true, they are lies. They are not congruent with God’s view of you. In his eyes you are beautiful and wonderfully made. Your body knows a lie when it hears one! When you speak words of truth your cells respond positively and true, optimal health follows.
  2. I Am is also God’s name. When you speak it you are calling upon the creator of life itself – the One who is your divine physician.

Love, Peace, Good

  1. The vibration of the words love, peace, and good has the power to heal the human heart and soul beyond our understanding. When we speak them we speak truth to our physical, emotional, and spiritual body. We remind ourselves that we are created in the image of God who is himself eternal love, peace, and perfect goodness.
  2. Depending on Enneagram Triad we find ourselves in we tend to speak the same family of lies to ourselves when we go “unconscious”. Anger, anxiety, and shame arise from within and we move away from the truth of who we are – beloved children created in the image of the Holy Trinity. It serves us to remember that our ability to experience and resonate love, peace, and goodness is infinite because love, peace, and goodness are rooted in God. It is our birthright to experience and express them.
  3. When we repeat “I Am Love”, “I Am Peace”, or “I Am Good” we are also repeating “God God”, the great I Am who is Love, Peace and all Good. Kinda the perfect lifeline in times of trouble!

Meditation

While I recommend this prayer be used during acute trauma, I also highly recommend its use as a form of meditation when you want to heal from emotional or spiritual pain. To use this mantra as a form of meditation I invite you begin by settling your body, allow yourself time and space to comfortably rest. As you begin your meditation envision love, peace, or goodness entering into your body (love), peace (head), and heart (goodness). Open yourself to these gifts. You can also pay attention to your breathing if you wish. Picture God’s love, peace, or goodness healing your pain. Surrender your pain to the foot of the cross, giving it to Jesus Christ. Conclude by giving love, peace, or goodness permission to live eternally in that space.

All will be well. You will see for yourself; every kind of thing shall be well. – Julian of Norwich
